Akademgorodok

Scientific research settlement, 25 km/16 mi southeast of Novosibirsk in western Siberia, Russian Federation. It was founded in the 1950s by the Soviet Academy of Sciences as a scientific and academic satellite town of Novosibirsk, and contains a university, together with many research institutes and laboratories.

Akademgorodok was designed on the lines of a garden city, and was built 1957–66 on the north shore of the newly created Novosibirsk reservoir on the River Ob.

Begun in 1957 as part of the Sputnik-era scientific boom, Akademgorodok eventually acquired international renown as an idyllic community devoted to the life of the mind.
In Russia, Nuranen's charges will be students in the School for Creative Development and Free Choice in Akademgorodok, or Academy City, just outside Siberia's largest city.
Paul Josephson provides a history of Akademgorodok, the "Soviet New Atlantis," a utopian science city where Siberian scientists tried to live free from the faceless bureaucrats in Moscow but ultimately succumbed to their control.
