Akaka, Daniel Kahikina (1924- )

US Democratic politician, senator for Hawaii from 1990. He was elected to the US House of Representatives, as a Democrat for Hawaii, in 1976 and became senator for Hawaii in 1990. He was the first native Hawaiian to serve in both chambers of the US Congress.

Born in Honolulu, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and then, after a university education, worked as a school teacher and administrator.
