River in Greece, 219 km/136 mi long. It rises in the Pindus Mountains and flows south into the Ionian Sea, cutting through deep gorges to a swampy delta near the Echinades Islands. The Kremasta hydroelectricity scheme on the Achelous started operation in 1965 and is now also the centre of an irrigation scheme supplying water to farms on the plain of Thessaly.
