Aklan

Province of northwest Panay Island in the Philippines; area 1,818 sq km/ 702 sq mi; population (1995) 411,000. The capital is Kalibo (population 51,390; 1990). Aklan is mountainous in the west, with a narrow lowland strip to the east which is the main cultivated area where corn and root crops are produced. There is commercial fish and shrimp farming. Other products include piña textiles, and hemp-woven shoes and handbags.

Tourism is a major industry: the nearby island of Boracay is an international resort, and the Jawili waterfalls are 20 km/12 mi northwest of Kalibo.

The Ati-Atihan festival is held in Kalibo every January, which is considered the Mardi Gras of the Philippines.
