Aqtöbe

Industrial city on the River Ilek, in northwestern Kazakhstan, 100 km/62 mi south of the border with the Russian Federation, capital of Aqtöbe oblast (region); population (2004) 249,800. Chemicals, metals, electrical equipment are among the goods manufactured here. Aqtöbe stands on the main Moscow–Tashkent railway line; it is also located near to a large natural-gas field at Karachaganak.

Aqtöbe was established, as Aktyubinsk, in 1869 and expanded following the opening of the Trans-Caspian railway in 1905.

Oblast (region) in northwestern Kazakhstan; area 229,800 sq km/88,726 sq mi; population (1996) 747,000. The main towns are Aqtöbe (capital) and Chelkar. Located in the steppe region south of the main Ural Mountains, the area has abundant mineral deposits, notably chromium (at Khrom-Tau), nickel, asbestos, and borax; rivers include the Ilek, Tobol, and Uil. The main idustries are mining, chemical production, engineering, and food processing.

CNPC-AMG (China National Petroleum Corporation International - Aktobe Petroleum Joint Stock Company) awarded Parsons E&C a contract to provide proprietary technologies and basic engineering design package for an acid gas removal unit (including Mercaptan removal), sulfur recovery unit, tail gas clean-up unit and LPG H2S & Mercaptans removal unit for a new gas purification plant in the Zhanazhol oil field of Aktobe in Kazakhstan.
