Al-Battani, abu-Abdullah Muhammad ibn-Jabir (c. 850-c. 929)

Arab mathematician and astronomer. While following in general the Ptolemaic system, he made several improvements. He obtained more accurate values for the obliquity of the ecliptic and for the precession, and drew up improved tables giving the positions of the Sun and the Moon. His astronomical treatises were translated into Latin early in the 12th century and were printed in Nürnberg 1537 and Bologna 1645.
