El Obeid (or al-Obeid or al-Ubbayyid)

Capital of North Kordofan province, Sudan; population (2007 est) 428,600. In central Sudan, on the Kordofan Plateau, it is linked by rail with Khartoum 300 km/186 mi to the southwest, and connected by rail to Port Sudan. It is a market for cattle, gum arabic, oilseed, and durra (Indian millet).

An Anglo-Egyptian army, under General Hicks, was annihilated by a Mahdist force near to here in 1883.
