Last stand at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Though the Alamo fell to the Mexicans, the death of its Texan defenders – including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie – came to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of liberty. The Texan army under Sam Houston shouted ‘Remember the Alamo!’ as it defeated Mexican forces led by Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto in April 1836.

Mission fortress in San Antonio, Texas, USA. During the War of Texan Independence from Mexico, it was besieged 23 February–6 March 1836 by Santa Anna and 4,000 Mexicans. They killed the garrison of about 180 Texans, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.

The struggle against such overwhelming odds made the battle of the Alamo a rallying point for the settlers in the Texas War of Independence from Mexico.‘Remember the Alamo’ was the rally call.

The Alamo is now preserved as a national monument.
