Albacete

Market town and capital of Albacete province, southeast Spain; population (2001) 148,900. It produces cutlery, clothes, and footwear. Albacete is the largest city in the Castilla-La Mancha region.

Features of the town include La Sartén, an 18th-century circular construction, used for festivals and now also for commercial activity, and La Feria, a popular festival held every August. The University of Castilla-La Mancha, established in 1982, has a campus in Albacete. It is a regional university with campuses in four different cities. There is also a 16th-century church, still unfinished.

Province of southeastern Spain in southern Castilla-La Mancha autonomous community; area 14,864 sq km/5,739 sq mi; population (1991 est) 339,800. It is a tableland, hilly in places with fertile valleys and plains. The main occupations are stock-raising and agriculture. The capital is Albacete.
