Tirana (or Tiranë)

Capital (since 1920) of Albania; population (2001) 343,100. Industries include metallurgy, cotton textiles, soap, and cigarettes. It was founded in the early 17th century by Turks when part of the Ottoman Empire. Although the city is now largely composed of recent buildings, some older districts and mosques have been preserved.
