Albany River

River in north-central Ontario, Canada; length 1,000 km/600 mi. It issues from Lake St Joseph and flows east-northeast to James Bay at Kashechewan and Fort Albany, an Indian reserve; population (1991) 1,200. The Hudson's Bay Company established the fort in the 1680s, and it was long important in the fur trade; the river and portages over low divides were part of a waterway system leading west to Lake Winnipeg.
