Albemarle County

County in north-central Virginia, USA; area 1,878 sq km/725 sq mi; population (1990) 68,000. Its administrative headquarters is Charlottesville. The region is mountainous and semirural, with the Blue Ridge Mountains lying to the west. Charlottesville, an educational, financial, and industrial centre, is among the most expensive residential areas in Virginia. The county is rich in historic associations, particularly with Thomas Jefferson, whose home, Monticello, is southeast of Charlottesville.
