Alberdi, Juan Bautista

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Alberdi, Juan Bautista (1810–1884)

Argentine political theorist and diplomat. Forced into exile 1838 because of his opposition to dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, he wrote his great work Bases y punto de partida para la organización política de la república argentina/Bases and Starting Points for the Organization of the Argentine Republic in Chile 1852. Its case for strong federal government formed the basis for Argentina's constitution the following year.

He also championed the causes of immigration from Europe, railway construction, industrialization, and foreign trade, arguing that overseas capital was needed to finance Argentine expansion. The concept he outlined for his native land was based on order, wealth, liberty, and civilization.
