Alberobello

Town in Apulia region of southeast Italy, on the Murge plateau, 48 km/30 mi southeast of Bari; population (1991) 10,700. Alberobello is known for the trulli (conical, whitewashed drystone houses), still built to the ancient design, of which the old town is largely composed.

Centered mostly in and around the towns of Alberobello and Martina Franca, they add to their mystique by often having strange stone symbols - sometimes crosses of sorts, sometimes not - atop their conical roofs.
