Albert, Stephen (1941–1992)

US composer. His music embraces a variety of styles, including electronic. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1985 for his symphony Riverrun (after James Joyce). A second symphony was posthumously premiered by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995.

He studied with Darius Milhaud, Roy Harris, and George Rochberg.

Supernatural Songs for soprano and chamber orchestra (1963); Winter Songs for tenor and orchestra (1965); Bacchae for narrator, chorus, and orchestra (1968); Into Eclipse for tenor and orchestra (1981); Flower on the Mountain for soprano and chamber orchestra (1985); Distant Hills Coming Nigh for soprano, baritone, and chamber ensemble (1991).

Imitations for string quartet (1964); Winterfire for seven players (1979); Wind Canticle for clarinet and ensemble (1992).
