Albert Lea

Town and administrative headquarters of Freeborn County, south Minnesota, USA; population (2000) 18,400. It is situated on Albert Lea and Fountain lakes, 29 km/18 mi west of Austin. Situated at the hub of a regional transportation complex, it is a wholesale distribution centre for local agricultural and dairy products. Meatpacking is important; clothing, farm equipment, and electrical goods are also produced. Nearby lakes and Helmer Myre State Park, 3 km/2 mi to the east, are summer tourist attractions.
