Albertville

Resort town at the entrance to the Val d'Arly in the département of Savoie, southeast France, situated on the right bank of the River Arly not far from its confluence with the Isère; population (1999) 17,300. It was the scene of the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Albertville was built by Charles Albert, King of Sardinia, in 1845 to replace the fortified town of Conflans, which remains as a small village on the opposite bank of the river.

Attractions include the Conflans Museum of Ethnography and History, the De Manuel de Locatel castle, and the Winter Olympic Games permanent exhibition centre.

Albertville

Town in Marshall County, northeast Alabama, USA; population (1990) 14,500. It is situated on Sand Mountain, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Gadsden. It is an agricultural market and processing hub; the centre of Alabama's poultry industry, it has plants for the processing, grading, and packing of chickens and eggs. Textiles and furniture are also manufactured here.
