Albina

Village and capital of the Marowijne district of eastern Suriname, lying on the west bank of the Marowijne River, which forms the border between Suriname and French Guiana. From the 1960s onwards, tourism became an important source of income here. Albina was almost completely destroyed in fighting with antigovernment rebels in the late 1980s and has yet to recover. Today the population is negligible.

With the permission of the Carib Indians, it is possible to visit the nearby Galibi nature reserve, where Ridley, green, and leather-back turtles nest.

Albina was founded by the German immigrant A Kappler in 1846, and developed as a place for trading gold, wood, and agricultural products with the Maroons (descendants of escaped slaves).

Albina

Northern suburb of Portland, Oregon, USA. Before 1891 it was an independent city. Albina has long been an entry point for immigrants; it is one of Portland's most ethnically and racially diverse areas, and is home to much of the city's black population. A target of urban renewal programs, including highway and hospital construction with accompanying residential displacement, Albina experienced unrest in the 1960s. In the 1990s, a comprehensive planning effort was initiated to restore and revive the neighbourhood.
