Albizu Campos, Pedro (1891-1964)

Puerto-Rican revolutionary. A member of the Nationalist Party, he was the most prominent independentista of his time. He masterminded a nationalist uprising in Puerto Rico in 1950 and was accused of being behind an attempt to assassinate President Harry S Truman. Sentenced to a 53-year prison term for this, he was offered a conditional pardon that was revoked in the wake of further nationalist attacks.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and educated at Harvard, Albizu Campos joined the Nationalist Party in 1924. He was jailed from 1936 to 1947 for advocating the violent overthrow of the US administration of Puerto Rico. He died in prison.
