Alboin (lived 6th century)

King of the Lombards about 561–573. At that time the Lombards were settled north of the Alps. Early in his reign he attacked the Gepidae, a Germanic tribe occupying present-day Romania, killing their king and taking his daughter Rosamund to be his wife. About 568 he crossed the Alps to invade Italy, conquering the country as far south as Rome. He was murdered at the instigation of his wife, after he forced her to drink wine from a cup made from her father's skull.
