Albright, Madeleine (1937– )

US diplomat and Democrat politician, Secretary of State 1997–2001. An adviser to leading Democrat politicians from the early 1970s, she was US ambassador to the United Nations 1993–97.

Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of a Czech diplomat. After spending World War II in exile in London, her family secured asylum in the USA following the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948. She was a university professor and adviser on international affairs before becoming the country's first female secretary of state in 1997.

She published a memoir, Madam Secretary, in 2003.
