Albury

Town in New South Wales, Australia, situated on the north bank of the River Murray, on the border with Victoria, 573 km/356 mi southwest of Sydney; population (2001) 69,900. Its twin town, on the south side of the River Murray in the state of Victoria, is Wodonga, and the two towns are commonly referred to as Albury-Wodonga. The towns were designated a growth centre in the 1970s and serve the surrounding agricultural region. Industries include food processing, electrical engineering, meatworks, and the production of pet food, beverages, clothing, stationery, timber, wine, and wool.

The surrounding agricultural region is rich in cereal crops, cattle, and wine. Pigs are also raised, horses are bred, and fruit, tobacco, hops, almonds, walnuts, chestnuts, and safflowers are grown.

Just north of Albury is the Ettamougah pub, built as a representation of the pub which features in locally-born Ken Maynard's cartoon, published in the Australian Post since 1959. Charles Sturt University (CSU), based in Wagga Wagga, has two campus sites located at Albury: City campus and Thurgoona campus.
