Alcaeus (c. 611–c. 580 BC)

Greek lyric poet. Born at Mytilene in Lesvos, a contemporary of Sappho, he was a member of an aristocratic family opposed to the ruling tyrants, and spent time in exile. The surviving fragments of his poems deal with politics, drinking, and love. The Alcaic stanza is named after him.

The Alcaic metre was a favourite with Horace, and has been imitated by Tennyson in ‘O Mighty-mouth'd inventor of harmonies...’.
