Alcamo

Town in Trapani province, northwest Sicily, at the foot of Mount Bonifato, 40 km/25 mi east of Trapani; population (1990 est) 43,200. Products include wine and fruit, and there are mineral springs. Alcamo is of Arab foundation and has many relics of the Saracens, who controlled the town until 1233.

The poet Cielo D'Alcamo was born here.
