Alchymist, Der

Opera by Ludwig Spohr (libretto by K Pfeiffer, based on W A Irving's story The Student of Salamanca), first produced in Kassel, Germany, on 28 July 1830. The story tells how the alchemist Tarnow refuses to let his daughter Louise marry until he has discovered the philosopher's stone. He releases her after her lover impersonates the devil, demanding a young woman as payment.
