AlderneyThird largest of the Channel Islands, with its capital at St Anne's; area 8 sq km/3 sq mi; population (2001) 2,030. Tourism flourished on Alderney from the early 20th century. The main employers are now tourist-related businesses and services providing building and maintenance work for locals and immigrants. There is also a small finance industry. The island was evacuated in 1940, during World War II, and under German occupation. The islanders started to return in 1945.
