Aldersgate

Aldersgate

Area and street in the City of London, England, running northwards from St Martin's-le-Grand to Goswell Road. The old gate is mentioned in about AD 1000 as Ealdredesgate, which means ‘the gate of one Ealdred’. It was restored after being burned down in 1666, but was eventually dismantled in 1761.

John Day (1522–1584), the Elizabethan printer, is said to have lived in the gatehouse, along with the Protestant propagandist John Foxe.
