Alderson

Town in Monroe and Greenbrier counties, southeast West Virginia, USA; population (1990) 1,200. It is situated on the Greenbrier River, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Lewisburg. Settled in 1777 in what became an agricultural and quarrying area, it has a Federal women's reformatory (1926), and was home to Alderson Baptist Academy (1901), now part of Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi.
