Aldgate| Area and street in the City of London, England, connecting Fenchurch Street with Whitechapel. The old gate, which was called Eastgate in the Saxon period and, later, Alegate, was the most easterly gate of the City. Excavations have established that it was formerly the site of a Roman gate; it was rebuilt in 1608 and finally demolished in 1761. |
