Aldrich, Robert (1918-1983)

US film director and producer. Known for his socially conscious and often violent films, he worked his theme of the individual against the institution into the framework of traditional genre material. Key films include the film noir thriller Kiss Me Deadly (1955), the World War II drama Attack! (1956), and the sadistic thriller Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962).

His early film Apache (1954) explored the exploitation of Native Americans. Other films include The Big Knife (1955), The Dirty Dozen (1967), his biggest box office hit, Ulzana's Raid (1972), The Killing of Sister George (1968), and Hustle (1975).
