Aldrovandi, Ulisse

Aldrovandi, Ulisse (1522–1605)

Italian naturalist and physician. He travelled extensively throughout Europe, researching for his great work on natural history, published 1599–1606. He established the botanical garden at Bologna in 1568 and was its first director; he also formed a natural history museum.

Born in Bologna, he took a medical degree there in 1553 and was subsequently professor of botany and natural history at that university.
