Alegría, Ricardo E (1921- )

Puerto-Rican scholar. Alegría was the first Latin-American to win the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Picasso Medal in 1993. The driving force behind the creation of the influential Institute of Puerto-Rican Culture in 1955, he went on to launch the Graduate Center for Advanced Studies on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in 1976. He has also been awarded the Charles Frankel Award of the Humanities.
