Aler, John (1949- )

US tenor. He studied at the Juilliard School and made his debut there in 1977, as Ernesto; his European debut was at Brussels in 1979 (as Belmonte). He has since appeared at the Vienna Staatsoper, Glyndebourne, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (on both occasions as Ferrando, in 1979 and 1986) and at the Salzburg Festival (as Don Ottavio, in 1988). His recordings include Handel's Semele and Messiah, Così fan tutte, and Carmina Burana.
