Alessandro Stradella

Opera by Friedrich von Flotow (libretto, in German, by F W Riese, pseudonym ‘W Friedrich’), first produced in Hamburg, Germany, on 30 December 1844. It deals with doubtful incidents in the scandalous life of Stradella, and is based on a play with music, some by Flotow, P A A P de Forges, and P Dupert. Stradella deflects would-be assassins by singing to them of mercy and kindness.
