Ålesund (or Aalesund)

Coastal town in Møre og Romsdal county, western Norway; population (2007 est) 40,800. It is the main centre of the Norwegian herring-fishing industry. The town is built on five islands, linked by bridges.

The town was destroyed by fire 1904, and was rebuilt within three years in art nouveau style.

We took a bus through the hills, past an occasional sod-roofed dwelling and fields carpeted with dandelions, and ended up at the art nouveau city of Alesund, built in the 1930s.
Alesund is a busy little port with a strong nautical tradition on the west coast of Norway above Bergen.
The Norwegian researchers studied 2,161 children born in the cities of Trondheim and Alesund from 1979 to 1981.
