Most extensive glacier in Europe, 23.6 km/14.7 mi long, beginning on the southern slopes of the Jungfrau in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland.

The now 23-kilometre (14-mile) Aletsch glacier has shrunk by several kilometres over the decades and is regarded by scientists as one of the most visible examples of the impact of global warming in the Alps.
Indeed, the specialist for such issues in the Federal Office for the Environment, Carlo Ossolo, said little if anything can be done to "save" the Aletsch glacier, but its fate can serve a vital purpose, educating the public on global warming worldwide.
