Alexander, Carlos (1915- )

US bass-baritone. He studied in Berlin and with Friedrich Schorr in New York. He made his debut at St Louis in 1941, as Masetto. He sang widely in North and South America in the 1940s and in Germany from 1955. In 1961 he sang Mandryka at Florence and was Gregor Mittenhoffer in the first British performance of Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers, at Glyndebourne. He sang at Bayreuth 1963-64, as Beckmesser. At the Stuttgart Staatsoper in 1968 he took part in the first performance of Orff's Prometheus. He taught at the Salzburg Mozarteum.
