Gyumri

City in Armenia, situated on a plateau in the Caucasus Mountains at a height of over 1,500 m/4,920 ft, 85 km/53 m northwest of Yerevan; population (2001) 150,900. Industries include textiles, metalworking and engineering.

There has been a settlement on the site of Gyumri since medieval times. The modern town was founded in 1837 as the fortress of Aleksandropol. The city was twice virtually destroyed by earthquakes, in 1926 and 1988.
