Alexandroupolis

Port of western Thrace in northeast Greece, capital of the department of Évros; population (2001) 48,900. Alexandroupolis is situated on the Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish border, 105 km/65 mi southwest of Edirne. Its main exports are wheat, lignite, livestock, maize, and sunflower and sesame seeds. Imports include fertilizers, coal, sugar, and manufactured goods. Alexandroupolis is also a holiday resort and tourism is a growing industry.

Alexandroupolis has an air link with Athens and is the seat of a Greek Orthodox bishop.

Until 1919 the town was called by its Turkish name Dedeagaç. It was renamed Alexandroupolis, after King Alexander of Greece, when it was returned to Greece in 1919, after being annexed by Bulgaria during World War I. The harbour was damaged in World War II and rebuilt with financial and technical assistance from the USA.
