Alexis (or Aleksiy), Sergey Vladimirovich Simanskiy (1877-1970)

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, head of the Russian Orthodox Church from 1945. He played a prominent part in establishing a modus vivendi between the Orthodox Church and the authorities, securing an extension of church work in return for loyalty to the Soviet government, but took a firm stand in the face of the renewed communist offensive against the church in the 1960s.
