Alexis Mikhailovich (1629–1676)

Tsar of Muscovy from 1645, second tsar of the house of Romanov, and father of Peter the Great. During his reign a code of laws was compiled which remained in force until the 19th century. A revision of prayer books by Patriarch Nikon lead to a schism in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Ukraine was reunited with Muscovy; Russian possessions in Siberia were enlarged; successful wars were waged against Poland; and there were several rebellions, including the uprising led by Stenka Razin.
