Stieglitz, Alfred (1864–1946)

US photographer. After forming the multimedia Photo-Secession Group with Edward Steichen in New York (1902), he started up the magazine Camera Work (1902–17). Through exhibitions at his gallery ‘291’ he helped to establish photography as an art form. In 1924 he married the painter Georgia O'Keeffe, who was the model in many of his photographs. His cloud series, the portraits of O'Keeffe, and his studies of New York City, are his most famous works.

Stieglitz was also instrumental in promoting modern art, both by European and American artists. He was the first exhibitor to show such painters and sculptors as Picasso, Cézanne, Rodin, Matisse, Brancusi, and O'Keeffe.

According to Studley President Michael Colacino, loaning this collection to The National Arts Club is significant because 1) it marks the first time that Studley has exhibited a large sampling of its art collection in a public venue, a key initiative of the firm's new art program; and 2) it represents the return of Alfred Stieglitz and his colleagues from the Photo-Secession to The National Arts Club after nearly one hundred years.
I've thought that we need courageous and clever exhibitor-publishers who might create new ways of presenting the films--an Alfred Stieglitz or a Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler for film.
