Alfvén, Hugo (1872-1960)

Swedish violinist and composer. His music is programmatic and in a light vein. He studied under Johan Lindegren at the Stockholm Conservatory, and began his career as violinist in the court orchestra. From 1910 to 1939 he was music director at the University of Uppsala.

Works

Orchestral

five symphonies, two symphonic poems, Swedish rhapsody Midsommarvaka (1903), two other rhapsodies for orchestra.

Choral

Unge Herr Sten Sture for chorus and orchestra (1912).

Vocal

The Bells for solo voice and orchestra, a cantata (1900).

Other

two marches; pieces for piano and for violin; songs.
