Algeciras

Port in Cádiz province, southern Spain, situated to the west of Gibraltar across the Bay of Algeciras; population (2001) 101,500. An industrial complex, built around a petrol refinery, was established in the Bay of Algeciras in the 1970s. Algeciras was originally founded by the Moors in 713; it was taken from them by Alfonso XI of Castile in 1344.

The Algeciras Conference was held here in 1906.
