Algonquin

The Algonquian-speaking hunting and fishing people who once lived around the Ottawa River in eastern Canada. Many now live on reservations in northeastern USA, eastern Ontario, and western Québec; others have chosen to live among the general populations of Canada and the USA.

Algonquin

Town in McHenry and Kane counties, northeast Illinois, USA; population (1990) 11,700. It is situated on the Fox River, 64 km/40 mi northwest of Chicago. Lying at the outer edge of the Chicago metropolitan area, it has witnessed great residential growth towards the end of the 20th century, and has moved away from its traditional reliance on local agriculture. Hampers and caskets are among the goods produced here.
