Aliquippa

Town in Beaver County, southwest Pennsylvania, USA; population (1990) 13,400. It is situated 32 km/20 mi northwest of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1750 as a trading post on the Ohio River, it was later named in honour of ‘Queen’ Al, a local Seneca. Early industries included saw and grist milling. Aliquippa grew dramatically with expansion of the steel industry around Pittsburgh in the early 20th century, and is a centre of steel production. It merged with the adjacent borough of Woodlawn in 1928.
