alkali metal |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
alkali metalAny of a group of six metallic elements with similar chemical properties: lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, and francium. They form a linked group (Group 1) in the periodic table of the elements. They each have a valency of one and have very low densities (lithium, sodium, and potassium float on water); in general they are reactive, soft, low-melting-point metals. Because of their reactivity they are only found as compounds in nature. How to thank TFD for its existence? | Meteoric waters in near-surface settings are almost always
undersaturated with respect to carbonates because rain water is
essentially devoid of earth alkali metals yet slightly acidic because of
dissolved atmospheric C[O. The new observation that sodium can melt at
just above room temperature, 27[degrees]C, confirms a growing suspicion
among scientists that alkali metals are more complicated than they
previously thought. This is especially
important in alkali metals where the one valence electron is
particularly sensitive to any core changes. |
