Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
alkaline-earth metalAny of a group of six metallic elements with similar bonding properties: beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. They form a linked group in the periodic table of the elements. They are strongly basic, bivalent (have a valency of two), and occur in nature only in compounds. Calcium and magnesium are abundant on Earth and essential for all organisms, while the other three elements are relatively rare. How to thank TFD for its existence? The mystery element is an alkaline earth metal, or one of a group
of elements that is highly reactive in nature. But he argues that placing
helium with the alkaline earth metals results in a more regularly shaped
structure that can take two forms. But this alkaline earth metal is more commonly found in
compounds (two or more elements that are chemically combined). |
