Alkmaar

Town in the province of North Holland, Netherlands, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Amsterdam; population (2006 est) 94,500. Alkmaar is situated on the North Holland Canal and is intersected by a network of canals. The town has a Gothic church, built 1470–1512, and a Gothic town hall, and holds a large weekly cheese market.
