Allan, David (1744–1796)

Scottish history and genre painter. He studied in Glasgow and at Rome, where 1773 he won a gold medal for his Origin of Painting and became a member of the Academy of St Luke. He settled in Edinburgh and was known as the ‘Scottish Hogarth’ for his watercolours and engravings of contemporary life, his subjects, for example The Penny Wedding (Edinburgh), anticipating those of Wilkie.
